Claws or Claus? Merry Krampus Christmas!

Several years ago I created Krampus Advent Calendars for my grownup children.

At the time my daughter, Tabitha was in grad school at UNC Chapel Hill and her brother, Jordan was working down the road in Mebane, North Carolina.  I sent them via USPS...a warm (as in Hell) and fuzzy care package from their mother to remind them Santa is watching. So is Krampus!

Claws or Claus? Let the count down begin!

Ya'll better be good!

Happy Thanksgiving: Pass the Rat!

About a year ago I was contacted by a publishing house in Poland regarding translation rights for my children's book Nuclear Power: How a Nuclear Power Plant Really Works!  I'm excited to announce that we recently came to an agreement and the book is being translated to Polish.

The book will used by Poland's Ministry for Climate and Environment as part of the "Polish Atom" program. I'm thrilled as this means what I affectionately refer to  as my "Nuke Book" will be used for the very thing I envisioned it would be when I wrote it.

Poland doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving the way we do here, and I explained to the editor I've been working with that I'll be taking a holiday this next week. Which reminded me  of this promotional illustration/slogan  I used several years back when Instagram was still new to all of us.

It also reminded me of an illustration we DID NOT use in my nuke book. I still laugh about it. My illustrator was young, childless, and more to the point- had no experience dealing with parents!  Lucky for him- this children's author (imperfect parent) found it and still finds it hilarious!

Happy Thanksgiving! Pass the Rat Turkey.

Boobs and Pink Pumpkins! It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Hello Witches! I'm flying out of retirement to remind all of you not to forget to schedule your annual mammogram! So much has changed since I published the children's book Tickles Tabitha's Cancer-tankerous Mommy! © 2021

However, one thing remains the same: Early detection can save your life!

Bringing Sexy Back at Seventy

This September 2023, my husband celebrated turning 70 years old. Between cancer, chemo and the mother of all surgeries, it's  been a rough ride these last couple of years.  You wouldn't know it looking at him! #bringingsexy #celebrating70

Sedona Sunrise: Hot Air Balloon Scare Factors

It’s been a few decades since Randy and I went on a hot air balloon ride. In my 30s I didn’t pay near as much attention to some of the scare factors like:

1. Morning coffee. You need a bladder that can hold it for several hours.

2. My weight. Yep. They asked for it and since I wanted the balloon to get off the ground and not come crashing down- I was honest!

3. Climbing in and out of the basket. I wasn't about to ask for a ladder.

While it didn't bother us, some of you might not like getting up at 4:30 AM to participate in a  hot air balloon ride. Take it from me a sunrise hot air balloon ride over Sedona, Arizona is worth getting up for!

We flew with Northern Light Balloon Expeditions. Our experience from set up to the champagne brunch went seamlessly. Our pilot Dan and his entire crew were awesome. Given all the labor and safety requirements these guys do during the process I would have understood if they had been less enthused and more fatigued when it came to customer service, but they appeared genuinely excited for us all to have a good time. It was obvious from the way they treated us they enjoy their jobs.

The Grand Canyon: there's hiking and there's HIKING!

After a year or so of chemo, surgery and cancer recovery the Grand Canyon was on my husband's bucket list. So this May we flew to Phoenix and drove to the Grand Canyon. The photos we took could never do it justice.

We managed to hike the mile and a half to the first rest stop on Bright Angel Trail. We live in the Tennessee mountains and I hike our mountainous neighborhood three days a week.  Thank God I do too, because the Grand Canyon hike wore me out!
